Cast Iron Half Round vs Cast Aluminium Half Round
Alumasc Heritage cast aluminium half round is designed as a direct replacement for cast iron half round. Cast aluminium weighs roughly a third of cast iron, never rusts, never needs painting, and carries a 40 year guarantee. Cast iron is heavier, requires painting every 3 to 5 years, and has no manufacturer guarantee. However cast iron is the original material and some conservation officers on listed buildings require genuine cast iron rather than aluminium. If your local authority accepts cast aluminium, it is the more practical choice for most restorations.

Does cast iron guttering need painting? Yes. Cast iron is supplied primed and must be painted with a suitable exterior metal paint before installation and repainted every 3 to 5 years to prevent rust.
How heavy is cast iron half round? A 1.83m length weighs approximately 8 to 10kg. Installation usually requires two people and fascia boards must be in good condition to support the weight.
How long does cast iron guttering last? With proper maintenance including regular painting, cast iron guttering can last 50 to 100 years or more.
Is cast iron required on my listed building? Check with your local conservation officer. Some require genuine cast iron, others accept cast aluminium as a suitable alternative.
Can I connect cast iron to cast aluminium? Yes. Adaptors are available to connect the two systems. This is useful when replacing part of a cast iron run while the remainder is still in good condition.
