Copper rainwater hoppers are decorative and functional collection points that gather water from one or more sources and direct it into a single downpipe below. Found on the finest period properties, listed buildings, churches, and prestige homes, copper hoppers are both practical and ornamental. Like all copper products they develop a distinctive green patina over time and have a life expectancy of 100 years or more with virtually zero maintenance.
At Gutters.co.uk we stock copper hoppers with all fittings for fast UK delivery.
A hopper (also called a hopper head, rainwater head, or collector head) is a funnel shaped collector fixed to the wall at the top of a downpipe run. It collects water from one or more sources such as multiple gutter outlets, flat roof drainage, overflow pipes, or parapet gutters. The water is channelled into a single downpipe below. On period and prestige buildings, copper hoppers are often the most striking decorative element of the rainwater system, sometimes featuring date stamps, monograms, or ornate designs.
Copper hoppers are used when two or more gutter outlets need to drain into a single downpipe, when flat roof or parapet drainage needs to connect to a wall mounted downpipe, when an overflow pipe needs to discharge into the rainwater system, when replacing an existing copper or cast iron hopper on a listed building, when a decorative architectural feature is desired at the top of a downpipe, or on prestige properties where the copper hopper adds character and value to the building.
Material: solid copper
Life expectancy: 100+ years
Maintenance: virtually none
Finish: polished copper, develops natural green patina over time
Compatible downpipe: round and square
Cast iron rainwater heads are the traditional alternative. Cast iron is heavier, requires painting every 3 to 5 years, and will rust if not maintained. Copper is lighter, never needs painting, and develops a self-protecting patina. For listed buildings where the original hopper was cast iron, the conservation officer will advise whether copper is an acceptable replacement.
Brett Martin Cascade PVC hoppers offer a budget alternative with a cast iron effect finish. PVC is significantly cheaper and lighter but cannot replicate the natural beauty, patina development, or 100+ year lifespan of genuine copper. For listed buildings and prestige properties, copper or cast iron is the appropriate choice.
Half Round Gutter the most traditional copper gutter profile.
Ogee Gutter decorative S shaped profile for period properties.
Box Gutter square profile for angular contemporary designs.
Round Downpipe standard circular downpipe.
Square Downpipe angular downpipe for a formal appearance.
Does the hopper fit both round and square downpipe? Copper hoppers are available with outlets for both round and square downpipe.
Will copper hoppers go green? Yes. They develop the same natural green patina as all copper products over 10 to 20 years, matching the gutter and downpipe.
Are copper hoppers accepted on listed buildings? Yes. Copper is considered a premium, period appropriate material. If the original was cast iron, check with your conservation officer whether copper is accepted as a replacement.
Can I connect multiple gutter outlets to one hopper? Yes. That is one of the primary functions. A hopper collects water from multiple sources and channels it into a single downpipe below.
Is professional installation needed? Recommended. Copper hoppers are heavy and need secure wall fixings. Soldered connections to the downpipe provide the most durable joint.
Can copper hoppers be used with other metal systems? Copper should not be in direct contact with other metals due to galvanic corrosion. Use isolation fittings or adaptors if connecting to a different material.
